Original Items: One-of-a-kind set. In a true war situation just about everyone remembers just how much we they believe in God. Well this guy lived it and it all worked out for him!
Whitney S. Yeaple enlisted on December 13th, 1917 in the Medical Department of the U.S. Army and appointed to Camp Greenleaf. Then appointed Lieutenant Chaplain on August 15th 1918 and appointed to Camp Zachary Taylor in Kentucky.
There he spent his time training Chaplain candidates and finally ended up as Port Chaplain at the Port of Embarkation at Hoboken in New Jersey. He was discharged from the U.S. Army on July 23rd 1919. He went on to become a Baptist Minister in Rochester, New York but thoughtfully packed all his Military paraphernalia in a trunk and stored in his attic until his family recently decided to let it go.
Enclosed in his original WWI suitcase are the following:
WWI Chaplain's army tunic with 1st Lieutenant's silver bars and crucifix collar insignias.
WWI visor hat marked "Levy Bros, Louisville, Kentucky.
Liturgical collar marked "American Collar Company".
Trade marked leather case containing his shoe brushes.
Army Issue "Housewife" (Sewing Kit).
Pair of WW1 officer's leather leggings both right and left.
Straight razor in case marked K of C (Knights of Columbus).
A dozen or so religious hard cover books and masses of religious pamphlets.
His enlistment details together with his certificates of merit and his final discharge certificate and paperwork.
Half a dozen napkin-sized national flags of U.S. Allies perhaps for use at Military Funerals.
Almost 100 snap shots and full size photographs of he and his men in WW1 and personal life.
Two portrait style photographs of him, one framed and glazed, in full uniform.
A very interesting wide-angle shot of his entire unit with a hand written list of the participants adhered to the reverse plus another similar photo.
Finally a most interesting a wall map complete with book index entitled "LIBERTY MAP OF THE WESTERN FRONT OF THE GREAT WAR" by Funk & Wagnalls Company of N.Y. & London.
The Visor Hat shows some deterioration from nearly 100 years storage but all in all a great WW1 U.S. Chaplain's Archive.
