Original Swiss M1842 Sawback Faschinenmesser Short Sword and M1892 Cruciform Bayonet with Scabbard

Item Description

Original Items: Only one set available. This is an extremely rare combination. The Swiss issued this Napoleonic style Saw Back Short Sword in 1842 for use by pioneer regiments. This sword is known as a Faschinenmesser.

In 1892, after the introduction of the bolt action Schmidt Rubin Rifle of 1889 by the Swiss army, a very unusual cruciform bayonet was issued in addition to the common knife bayonet. This cruciform bayonet was constructed using blades from various cruciform socket bayonets the Swiss had used from 1840 to 1880.

This M-1892 cruciform bayonet was issued in a leather scabbard with a leather tab that secured into the extremely rare leather belt frog that carries both the saw-back Pioneer sword and the cruciform bayonet.

Here we offer the entire package of the brass hilted sawback Pioneer sword with brass mounted leather scabbard, original leather frog that also secures the leather tab of the cruciform model 1892 leather scabbard that still holds this very scarce bayonet. Each component is offered in wonderful pristine condition.

After more than 50 years collecting we have never had, nor even seen, one of these combinations in the "flesh", only in diagrams and photographs of Swiss martial arms. This is an opportunity not to be missed.
