Original Napoleonic Wars Era Miniature Oil Painting of Admiral Horatio Nelson

Item Description

Original Item: One-of-a-kind. Another item from our spectacular Napoleonic Wars Naval Collection recently acquired in England is this framed oil painted oval miniature of Admiral Horatio Nelson.

Frame size: 5.5" x 4.25"

Painting size: 3" x 2.5"

Out of the frame one can see that the painting is on what is best described as a thin sliver of ivory which has had a paper backing adhered to rear which shows age and spotting marks. Out from under the glass it is easy to see that this is a very detailed hand painted miniature in oil paint. The painting is unsigned and just marvelous.

Dating we suspect of the period, between 1800-1815, Nelson became a national hero in 1798 with his defeat of the French at the Battle of the Nile (Aboukir Bay) followed by the Battle of Copenhagen in 1801 and of course the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805 where he lost his life. Although we feel the painting is from the period that does not mean it was not painted immediately following his death as the entire Country went into deep mourning.

The black wood frame has a brass suspension ring attached to a naval anchor shaped mount. From an age-old collection a great item which would be most welcome in any home.
