Original German WWI Sawback M98/05 Butcher Bayonet With Steel Scabbard - Dated 1909

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Item Available. This is exactly what was issued to pioneer and artillery regiments by the German Army in WW1. The 14-inch butcher blade features a 10-inch SAWBACK section, not intended to give a horrible death but for cutting wood for gun emplacements etc.

Unfortunately, the rumor spread that British and French soldiers were executing out-of-hand any German prisoners found to be carrying Saw Back bayonets because of the potential gruesome injuries inflicted by such a weapon. Even though this was a myth, many German soldiers had the saw backs filed off before going onto the front line for fear that there was truth to the rumor. This makes bayonets with the saw teeth in tact all the more scarce and therefore desirable.

Offered in nice condition and still bearing regimental markings to the cross guard that is fitted with high horns and no flash guard confirming this bayonet's very early issue date.
