The Devonshire Regiment was raised in 1685 and its’ first engagement was at the Battle of the Boyne in 1690. Known as the 11th Regiment of Foot it served with Marlborough in the Wars of the Spanish Succession. It served in putting down the 1st Jacobite Rebellion of 1715 and many other campaigns of the 18th century. It took part in the Napoleonic Wars and for most of the 1800s served throughout the Empire. In WW1 it served in Italy, Macedonia, Egypt and Palestine as well as on the Western Front.

In the Battle of the Somme in 1916 of the 775 men of the Regiment that "went over the top" 463 were either killed in action or wounded and only one officer remained unhurt. This is a regiment with a glorious war record.
