Original British Victorian Court Presentation Sword and Letter of General Sir Dighton MacNaughton Probyn VC

Original Item: One-of-a-kind. This is very interesting, an original Victorian Sword, made for "court attendance with Queen Victoria, belonging to a great hero of the day who became a favorite of the Royal family.

Born in 1833, he joined the East India Company army and served during the Siege of Delhi in 1857 and later at the Relief of Agra where he captured an enemy standard for which he was awarded the Victoria Cross for valor.

He transferred to the 1st Sikh Irregular Cavalry and took part in the Reliefs of Cawnpore and Lucknow. He became the Commanding Officer in 1858 and the Regiment soon became known as "PROBYN'S HORSE".

He served in the China War of 1860 and later in his illustrious Military career he embarked on a Court Career becoming Keeper of the Privy Purse and Comptroller of the Household. He died, aged 91 in 1924.

A quick glance at Wikipedia will show you what a dashing young officer he was at the time of PROBYN'S HORSE and what a revered old gentleman he became in later life.

This lovely little sword is a virtual miniature of the standard Infantry Officer's Sword of the 1850s with a fully engraved blade displaying the Queen's Crown over V.R. Featuring an all brass hilt with Royal cypher of Crown over V.R and a fins sharkskin grip.

The brass mounted leather scabbard bears the maker's markings in shield of MOORE & CO., of

No. 1 OLD BOND STREET, LONDON. The Scabbard's top mount also bears the owner's name (faintly):

GEN. SIR D.M.PROBYN, V.C.

Included with this fine sword is an original hand written letter with it's original stamped envelope dated the 30th August, 1866 written by this officer to a "Miss Dick" of Comrie Castle, Dunfermline, discussing travel arrangements in Scotland.
