Original British P-1879 Martini-Henry Saw Back Sword Bayonet with Scabbard

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This saw back bayonet would fit any British .450-577 caliber Martini-Henry rifle with a bayonet stand mounted to the front barrel band. It was intended for then short rifle Martini model originally issued to Sappers and Pioneers.

The saw back teeth were for cutting wood for gun emplacements and not to deliver a particularly gruesome death to an encountered foe.

The sword bayonet's blade measures almost 26 inches and the saw back is some 12 inches back from the point. The bayonet measures 31.5 inches in overall length. The grip is hard leather with a crisp checkering finish still remaining. The hilt features a single substantial steel knuckle guard so this bayonet can double as a small sword or cutlass.

The blade shows quite some use and an issue date of 1895 can still be seen together with the W.D. (War Department) markings.

Very hard to find with original steel mounted leather scabbard with all complete stitching. All in all, a scarce and desirable bayonet offered on excellent collector's condition.
