Original British Copper Half Gallon Naval Jug - Marked H.M.S. Minotaur 1885

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. From a 400 ton iron clad warship formerly named H.M.S. Elephant, launched in 1861, renamed H.M.S. MINOTAUR in 1863 which remained in service under that name until 1904 when it was renamed, a second time now to H.M.S. BOSCAWEN and finally broken up in 1922 at Swansea in Wales.

This is a copper ½ gallon jug of classical lines bearing a large "Fouled Anchor" to the body over HMS MINOTAUR and Half Gallon. Probably used in the galley, this still bears a military contractor name:

L. LUMLEY & Co. # 1 AMERICA SQUARE, LONDON

Lumley & Co was a naval supplier who operated between 1884 and 1906. The broad lip bears a pewter circle that has been added, about the size of a U.S. $0.25 cent coin, onto which have been stamped various government proof marks.

A few quite attractive small use marks and dents to the body, overall this has a great well over one hundred-year-old patina. An original Victorian British naval measure from a known Battle cruiser ready to display.
