Product Description
New Made Item: Under Shaka Zulu, the Zulu warrior carried a heavy broad bladed stabbing spear with an approximate 13.5 inch blade over 2 inches wide fastened with wire wrapping to a 30” long wooden shaft. The ZULU IKLWA was is has is a shorter-style assegai with a two to three foot shaft and had a larger broader blade of one foot length. This weapon was known as the iklwa or ixwa – for the sound that was heard as it was withdrawn from the victim's wound. Made famous in the Zulu Wars of South Africa, as seen in the films “Zulu” and “Zulu Dawn” and used by the Zulu tribe during the Battle of Isandlwana, the Battle of Rorke's Drift, and the Battle of Ulundi during the Zulu war in 1879 South Africa.
Constructed of High carbon tempered steel. Brass wire reinforced socket and all wood shaft. The Zulu “Iklwa” is a must for Victorian history buffs or collectors of the Martini-Henry rifle.
This reproduction is close to an original Iklwa in the IMA collection but not exact, most notably the shaft on the reproduction is thicker than our original as is the wire. However, it still makes a very impressive and affordable display piece.
