Original Item: Only One Available. This is a fantastic condition example of the Classic Sawback Pioneer Short Sword, often called a Falchion, and only the second original example that we have ever had! These were issued to Imperial Russian Troops and used extensively in the Crimean War again Britain, France and Turkey in the early 1850s. It has a huge 19 1/2" long heavy blade over 2 inches wide in most places, with massive saw teeth on the back. Measuring 26" overall, the Short Sword is fitted with a substantial solid Brass grooved hilt.
The falchion still bears original Russian issue markings, including ВН and АС on the cross guard, as well as П-Ѣ and МЭ on the blade ricasso. There is also a number 11 in a circle, and all these markings give this example some great research potential.
Condition is really great, and it does not look to have been issued or used for any significant amount of time. The blade is still bright and unsharpened, and the original factory grinding marks can still be seen in many areas. The handle is solidly attached, and has a lovely mellow "mustard" patina.
Principally used by Artillerymen for positioning the muzzle loading Cannon, these look like fearsome weapons. The first we example have had in quite some time, as they are quite hard to find, and this one is definitely one of the best we have ever seen. Ready to research and add to your collection!

A falchion (Old French: fauchon; Latin: falx, "sickle") is a one-handed, single-edged sword of European origin, whose design is reminiscent of the modern machete. Falchions are found in different forms from around the 13th century up to and including the 16th century. In some versions the falchion looks rather like the seax and later the sabre, and in other versions the form is irregular or like a machete with a crossguard.
