Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. The Kommunistische Partei Deutschlands (Communist Party of Germany or KPD) was a major far-left political party in the Weimar Republic during the interwar period, an underground resistance movement in NSDAP Germany, and a minor party in West Germany during the postwar period until it was banned by the Federal Constitutional Court in 1956.

Originally founded 1 January 1919 in the aftermath of the First World War by socialists who had opposed the war, the group underwent major leadership changes as well as changes in political ideology, eventually becoming firmly Stalinist in the early 1930s. It produced many posters and other propaganda items, which show a red flag with a white hammer and sickle emblem, though it was later more known for the yellow hammer and sickle inside a yellow star.

This is an early 1930s German Communist Flag, made shortly before the party was outlawed directly after the NSDAP takeover of 1933. The materials used are identical to the flags of the period, and we have compared it directly to several NSDAP era flags. The stitching patterns also match. It is in very good condition, showing some age toning and staining, typical for flags of the period. It measures 33 ½" × 43 ½", and has a thin hanger loop on one end.

The Weimar Republic (Weimarer Republik), officially the German Reich (Deutsches Reich), also referred to as the German People's State (Deutscher Volksstaat) or simply the German Republic (Deutsche Republik), was the German state from 1918 to 1933. As a term, it is an unofficial historical designation that derives its name from the city of Weimar, where its constitutional assembly first took place. The official name of the republic remained the German Reich as it had been during the German Empire because of the German tradition of sub-states.

Although commonly translated as "German Empire," Reich here better translates as "realm" in that the term does not necessarily have monarchical connotations in itself. The Reich was changed from a constitutional monarchy into a republic. In English, the country was usually known simply as Germany, and the Weimar Republic name became mainstream only in the 1930s.
