Original U.S. WWII Winter Combat “Tanker” Jacket Attributed To Captain James L. Shelby, Commanding Officer, HQ Company, 757th Tank Battalion - 1st Armored Division

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a truly remarkable example of the “Jacket, Combat, Winter”, which is more commonly known as the “tankers” jacket. The jacket is in excellent condition, with only minor signs of wear and tear from its faithful service. It is obvious that this jacket has been well taken care of and treated with the utmost respect.

One of the more impressive features of the jacket is the embroidered Captain’s “Bars” located on each shoulder. The intricate design and attention to detail on these bars are a testament to the skill and dedication of the individual who created them. The left sleeve of the jacket displays the 1st Armored Division insignia, while the right sleeve features the II Corps insignia, both of which are beautifully embroidered.

The history of this jacket is equally fascinating. It was obtained from a small museum that received it from the family of Captain James L. Shelby, who commanded the HQ Company, 757th Tank Battalion of the 1st Armored Division. Knowing the history and significance of this jacket only adds to its value and makes it an exceptional addition to any collection of military memorabilia. While we could not locate any service information on Captain Shelby, this would be an excellent candidate for further research.

The Winter Combat Uniform consisted of the Winter Combat Jacket, Winter Combat Trousers, and the Winter Combat Helmet. The jacket eventually became known as the Tanker Jacket by the veterans and uniform collectors. Its intent was for use by any Army unit needing a heavy-duty cold weather winter garment. Soldiers that were assigned to tank, reconnaissance units and armored infantry units in half-tracks needed cold weather gear when fighting from armored vehicles. Eventually, other ground fighting infantry, artillery, and other units were also issued the winter combat uniform while fighting in frigid winter climates such as Bastogne. This jacket very quickly earned an affinity by military people in many of the services due to its thermal protection and ease of wearing. Many soldiers not in armored units during WWII tried to get their hands on a Tanker Jacket just because it was very stylish and comfortable, attributes that still stand today.

This jacket is a hard-wearing and warm piece of military clothing that was designed to replace the previously used jackets, M1938 and M1941. It was extremely popular among the Armored Forces, who considered it the preferred combat uniform, and it was also highly sought after by all other ground forces. In fact, even AAF pilots were occasionally seen wearing this jacket.

The jacket is in very good condition, with the "gold" hued color still strong and vibrant. Although the cuffs, collar, and waistband display minor wear, they are still sturdy and durable enough to be worn (not recommended). Both the jacket shell and liner are in excellent condition, retaining all of their original components. This is an extremely rare and highly desirable jacket that is sought after by collectors of WWII GI uniforms and militaria.

This jacket is an excellent example of the quality and durability of military clothing from the WWII era. It is a testament to the skill and craftsmanship of the men and women who designed and manufactured it. Whether you are a collector of militaria or simply looking for a warm and durable jacket, this piece is sure to impress.
